Take America Back . . . from Whom?

On my early morning walk through a south Miami neighborhood, past the herd of peacocks and new multi-million-dollar mansions that have replaced the nurseries and small cement block homes, there were a few Trump 2024 signs on the big walls encircling the newer homes. The banners bore the slogan “Take America Back,” and I immediately wondered, from whom? From whom?

I am not against immigration in any sense of the word. I was appalled at the failure of the U.S. to honor our DACA agreements. However, our immigration policies have to be fair, coherent, predictable, and practical. Our monitoring systems need to be efficient and thorough. Our support system must be affordable so that the burden of providing required services does not fall on those least able to afford it. Not doing so only increases resentment, fear, and backlash.

Lest we forget, we are a nation of immigrants.
